I have extended family in the area. The forgien workers were bought in years ago to man the kosher packing plant, The orthodox have wrecked the local economy, buying one business, intimidating another to sell, and have been turning many locals bitter over the years. The local folks, have put up with much, in the way of discrimination by the Devote Orthodox who have been known to shove non-orthodox off the same sidewalk. This situation has festered for a long time, it appears someone has decided to give states evidence and bring down this house of cards. The real shame is, the imirgrants are pawns and the real evil ones the ones that profited from their labors, got word (leaked) early about the fair grounds lease over in Waterloo, Iowa. I'd bet big money that the major players are all on trips to the motherland right now, and are likely to stay there for an extended vacation. Many of these aliens are the only source of income for their families back home, I hope the Govern't doesn't waste my money holding them in jail, and simply deports them as soon as possible, for their families sakes. The company that employed them, and their backers are the ones that should go to jail, but won't (big lawyers and big money). You may ask why, don't they come to the US Legally? Legal entry into the US takes 25 years, so if you are coming to try to earn a living to feed your kids, they'll be gone and with families of their own before you get in. These companies pay substandard wages, and put local workers out of work, and destroy small town economies, and local standards of living, and most often export their profits to their homelands. This coin doesn't have two sides, it has three or more. Its a complex issue, Locals, Owners, Alien Laborers, Families, Governments, Politics, and its going to smell bad before it gets better. The teachers blog presents just one small view of the picture. There are many views of the Grand Canyon, all of them true, some just look better and smell better than the donkey's butt I had to follow the whole trip. I'm sure my view is just another glimpse of this issue in Postville, and the true real view will only be seen and understood by a rare few individuals. It is my hope the Our Government will take the time to see the whole picture, media is known for showing only the scary, exciting, or the racy view, which never reflects the whole truth.
