I always use the classic kind of bookmark--that was made expressly for marking books. If I have to use something nontraditional like a scrap of paper, I trade it right in for a "real" bookmark from my collection as soon as I get the chance. That's right; I have a collection. Two in books I'm currently reading, and eight in a drawer waiting for their turn to get used (and that's just the ones I have in Maryland. I have an even larger collection at my Mom's house in Ohio). I rotate through my bookmarks. When I start a new book, I mark it with a new bookmark from the top of the pile and put the old bookmark at the bottom. I have all sorts: a few I made during slow periods at work, several that were gifts (which have sentimental value), one or two I bought (but I probably will never feel the need to do that again), and some marketing bookmarks I got for free or found in the street. I'm not sure either, what this says about me. Maybe I'm just a little obsessive-compulsive, but I feel like I'm not doing my book justice if I don't give it a proper page marker.
